Welcome to Department of Computer Science & IT

Syllabus for MSc-CS-IT 2011-12
Syllabus for Mphil 2011-12
In 1987, the University established separate department of Electronics  and Computer Science and formed. An advisory committee was framed to frame the syllabus and to prepare a project report  for  the purpose of establishing a  strong center for  excellence in front areas of electronics and Computers. It was legitimately believed that only such department could provide leadership to Industries and colleges for further development of the disciplines. The Committee submitted its full report in 1987-88 recommending the establishment of the department of electronics and Computer Science with two courses:

M.Sc. (Applied Electronics)
M.Sc. (Computer Science)

The Committee recommended upgrading of the department to start M.Tech courses in the department with the help of state and Central Government.

The department of electronics and Computer Science came into   existence in 1989, on non-grant basis. In the absence of state and central funding, the University started only M.Sc. (Computer Science) with an intake capacity of 16 students and funds were granted for the infrastructure (without teaching staff) from the University development fund . A plan for a building of the department was drawn by m/s Tawade architecture and was approved. However, plans for M.Sc. (Electronics) were postponed for a future day. Plans for a separate building and other infrastructure were also postponed for lack of resources . Initially the department was started in the animal house of Zoology Department and then shifted to the science canteen’s building.

The long felt need for the resources was partially achieved by the announcement by the Government of Maharashtra on January 4, 1994 while declaring the expansion of University’s name to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. The Government has approved the establishment of the Department of Electronics and Computer Science and that it will provide funds for the building and faculty (1. Professor ,2 Reader and 4 Lecturer in the first instance) . The announcement gave a  fresh lease of life to the department. The courses have started on regular basis since 1994-95.

The University has started M.Sc. (Information Technology) from the academicyear 2000-01  in the department on non-grant basis .The department has shifted to the new  building in 2001 with an area of 1080 sqm. The department has taken off well with the latest facilities and laboratories in the filed of Computer Science & Information Technology. The name of the department has changed to Department of Computer Science and Information Technology in June, 2001.  The Department is not only working academically but also performing many Co-Curricular activities.

The Department is one of the earliest CS Departments started in Indian Universities. Back in 1980, when computer science was little known and the word IT didn't exist, a one-year programme was started towards the B.Sc. (Applied) degree in Computer Science. The M.C.A. programme was launched in 1983, the M.Tech. degree programme in 1985, and the one year B.Sc. (Applied) programme was upgraded to a two year M.Sc. in Computer Science in 1986.
